Fourth Annual Primary Schools' Council Conference

Posted on Monday 26 February 2007

Primary school pupils across the city will have the opportunity to take part in their very own conference on Wednesday (28 February).

Poppleton Road School council members have been organising the 2007 Primary School Council Conference, with help from City of York Council.

The conference will bring together council members from 37 schools across York and will be held at the Yorkshire Museum and the Hospitium in Museum Gardens.

The event aims to:

- give pupils a chance to share their ideas and learn from each other
- increase awareness of good practice in other schools councils
- give school councils an opportunity to engage in some physical activity that they can then take back to make their school a healthier place
- to strengthen the effectiveness of school councils within the school environment
- encourage young people to contribute effectively to the strategic planning of the children and young people's plan.

Unlike the previous school council conferences, this year pupils will be school council 'speed dating', which gives each school council the opportunity to talk about what they have done well and form partnerships with others.

There has been a lot of interest this year from other local authorities who would like to replicate the event in their area. The School Council UK will also be running a workshop.  Guests include the council's director for Learning, Culture and Children's Services, Patrick Scott, Councillor Carol Runciman, the council's Executive member for Children's Services, and the Lord Mayor, who will be presenting the Healthy Schools' Logo Award to schools in the morning.

Jenny Philpottt the Personal, Social, Health Education consultant at the council said: "This is the fourth school council conference for the city and is the only one of its kind in the whole country. Its success has attracted a lot of attention regionally, nationally and internationally. The pupils at Poppleton Road have worked extremely hard to organise the event and it shows that when young people are given an opportunity to make a difference, they can do it effectively with the greatest success."
