Nuisance tenant evicted

Posted on Tuesday 28 August 2007

A York woman who subjected her neighbours to months of noise and other nuisance behaviour has been evicted from her council-owned home.

City of York Council was given possession of the flat on Highmoor Road after a judge at York County Court ruled that Tanya Fowler (35) should vacate the property within 14 days.

Ms Fowler had been the tenant of the property since May 2003, but during this time her neighbours had to put up with loud music; youths buzzing the door at all hours to get entry to the block of flats; and screaming, swearing and fighting inside and outside the block by members of Ms. Fowler's household and their visitors. There were also cases of visitors to the flat urinating in the communal area and deliberately damaging council property by repeatedly vandalising the communal security door.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: "Because of the behaviour of Tanya Fowler and her household, this block of flats became a focus of attention for police, local councillors and housing officers for several months.  Ms Fowler's neighbours suffered intolerable levels of nuisance and nastiness, often right outside their own front doors.  It is entirely appropriate that Ms Fowler should now have to look elsewhere for housing.  There is no excuse for permitting this kind of anti-social behaviour and we do not expect other people to have to put up with it."
