City of York Council will be implementing its 'major' traffic management arrangements for the three-day Ebor meeting at York Racecourse on 21, 22 and 23 August.
Different levels of traffic management are implemented according to the nature of each race meeting, with options ranging from 'standard' to 'standard plus' and 'major'.
As the Ebor is the biggest meeting of the season, the following arrangements will be in place for traffic:
- Signs will be placed on major routes into the city to encourage traffic
to approach the racecourse via the A1237/A64. Extra signs will be
positioned in the city to reinforce the preferred route of approach.
- There will be 'no waiting' cones on Knavesmire Road, Campleshon Road,
Albemarle Road, Knavesmire Avenue, Knavesmire Crescent, Bishopthorpe Road
and one side of Church Lane in Bishopthorpe.
- As traffic leaves the racecourse, the traffic lights at the Sim
Balk Lane/Tadcaster Road junction will be turned off. This means that there
will be no right turn towards the city for traffic leaving Sim Balk Lane.
All traffic leaving the A64 to travel to Bishopthorpe will be directed
towards the Askham Bar roundabout to execute a u-turn. Vehicles will
then approach the junction from the city direction and be able to turn left
into Sim Balk Lane. It is estimated that the restrictions will apply
between 4pm and 7pm, although times may vary depending on traffic
flows.
- As traffic leaves the racecourse, a partial road closure will be in place
on Bishopthorpe Road between Main Street and Church Lane. This will
prohibit traffic from travelling towards the city. Those travelling from
Bishopthorpe to York should use Main Street, Sim Balk Lane, Church Lane and
Bishopthorpe Road.
- A one-way system will operate on Campleshon Road and Knavesmire Road
between the hours of 10am and 7pm. All vehicles will access the area from
Bishopthorpe Road and exit onto Tadcaster Road. Any streets leading onto
Campleshon Road will be closed to prevent vehicles making an incorrect turn
into the one-way system.
- Temporary traffic lights will operate at the junction of Knavesmire Road
and Tadcaster Road between 10am and 7pm.
- A two-lane system will operate on the arrival phase from the A64 to the
Sim Balk Lane/Tadcaster Road junction. This will mean that there will be no
access to Copmanthorpe via Top Lane between 10am and 2pm for vehicles
travelling from the London Bridge area. The only vehicles entering Top Lane
will have travelled on the A64 from the Leeds direction. There will be no
exit for vehicles from Top Lane in Copmanthorpe during these times.
