City of York Council is reminding residents who are considering employing
someone to carry out work at their home that they can use the Home Services
Directory for details of traders who have agreed to trade fairly and adopt
certain working standards.
Managed by the council and Age Concern York, the directory provides a list
of traders who have been vetted by the authority's Trading Standards team
and the police.
The aim is to help residents, particularly older people, chose reputable
trades people.
Liz Levett, the council's Trading Standards manager, said: "We often see an
increase in the number of complaints about rogue and door step traders at
this time of the year. It's often older and vulnerable people who are
most at risk of unscrupulous traders, so the Home Services Directory is
particularly important to them. All the traders included in the directory
have undergone strict checks , including supplying references and agreeing
to a code of conduct. The traders listed will prioritise work for older
people and will do a good job at a fair price."
The directory gives details of people providing a wide range of services,
from plumbing and painting to gardening and glazing.
To request a copy of the directory or to apply for your details to be
considered for inclusion in the directory please contact Consumer Direct on

The council is running a three month campaign entitled 'Feeling and Being
Safe', which aims to tackle issues of personal safety, property safety,
enforcement activity and the fear of crime.
