Residents in the Millfield Lane and Low Poppleton Lane areas of the city will be consulted on plans to replace an existing fixed bollard with one that allows access to buses.
The plans are part of the wider scheme to create a new site for Manor School and, if agreed, the bollard will allow the local bus services, and school buses, access to the school site. All other motor vehicles (including taxis and private hire vehicles) would be prevented from using the road. The proposal is in line with the council's transport policy, which aims to ensure that all new major developments in the city have convenient access to public transport.
Bill Woolley, the council's Director of City Strategy, said: "The position of the new school site should significantly reduce traffic movements along Millfield Lane and Low Poppleton Lane.
"The use of a rising bollard will increase the traffic flow slightly, but traffic levels will still be lower than at present, so it's a good compromise for residents and those using the school."
Detailed information about the proposals will be distributed to local residents over the next couple of weeks.
Residents will have the opportunity to put their views forward before a final decision about the proposal will be made in October.
