11.07.03: HMS YORK FREEDOM OF THE CITY PARADE

Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Charles Hall, will need his sea legs on Sunday (13 July) when he inspects the company of HMS York, with the ship's captain, Commander Richard Powell.

The sailors will exercise their right to Freedom of Entry to the city, as part of the celebrations to mark their return from the conflict in Iraq. Members of the crew will march through the city with bayonets fixed and swords drawn and will be accompanied by a Royal Marine Band.

The Lord Mayor will take the salute from the steps of the Mansion House during the parade which will start at Duncombe Place at 11.00am and take a route through the city centre before returning to the start point.

The Town Clerk will read the Freedom Scroll to the ship's company and they will be inspected by the Lord Mayor and their Captain before the parade through the city's streets..

Lord Mayor, Councillor Charles Hall, said: "I am pleased to be able to welcome the company of HMS York to the city. I wish them a very successful day and enjoyable day."

Following the parade, officers of all ranks will join the civic party at the Mansion House for a drinks reception before enjoying some time to themselves in the city.
