3:07:03: Community Policing on Agenda

Posted on Wednesday 2 July 2003
Community policing will be top of the agenda at City of York Council's fourth pre-council seminar later this month.

Chief Superintendent, John Lacy and Jane Mowat, director of Safer York Partnership, will meet councillors on Tuesday, July 8, to talk about policing in the city.

One of the items under discussion will be the creation of police ward managers - community police officers who patrol dedicated areas. Under this combined initiative set up by City of York Council, Safer York Partnership and North Yorkshire Police, communities can work directly with their ward officer in order to tackle persistent crime.

Members of the twenty strong community policing team patrol areas, attend ward meetings and liase with estate managers, council staff and local councillors in order to deal with non urgent police matters, and work with the community and other agencies to reduce crime.

The pre-council seminars, which are open to the public, have been introduced before meetings of the full council to allow councillors to explore major issues. Though members of the public will be unable to contribute at the seminar, they will be able to listen to the presentation and following discussion.

The seminar will take place in the council chamber between 5pm and 6pm, and the meeting of the full council will start at 6.30pm.
