Pupils Journey into the Unknown

Posted on Tuesday 1 July 2003
Imaginary snakes, fish, sunshine, music and tropical flowers will be on the agenda for school children taking part in a series of art workshops this week.

On Wednesday, July 3, Kora player Seikou Susso treated pupils at Carr Infant School to a musical Gambian adventure as part of the Live Arts in York Schools event (June 30-July 4) for four to seven year-olds. Under the theme of Journeys, the programme includes 65 arts events featuring musicians, actors, dancers and singers.

The workshops vary with children having the opportunity to explore a whole host of creative activities from making clay figures of themselves going on holiday to African storytelling. Gill Cooper, City of York Council head of arts said: "Live Arts Week gets pupils involved in a variety of different and unusual activities which clearly encourages their interest in the arts but also helps to instil team work, concentration and confidence."

Live Arts Week is part of the council's ongoing work to raise standards in York schools by developing pupils' abilities and experience in the fields of music, dance, drama and visual arts. ENDS
