21.01.03: New Sports Club at Oaklands

Posted on Tuesday 21 January 2003
A new club for youngsters with disabilities is being launched at City of York Council's Oaklands Sports Centre. The club offers local young people under 18 years of age the chance to meet new friends and play a variety of sports and activities. Carers and friends are also welcome. The sessions, at 7.00pm-8.30pm on Wednesdays, incorporate a wide range of activities including boccia, T-ball, tabletop games and other activities, all suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Leaders also hope that club members will be able to take part in local competitive tournaments such as the Regional Youth Games and Federation of Disability Sports Organisation tournaments.

Mark Wilson, community leisure officer, City of York Council, said:"The club is run by fully qualified staff, including special needs assistants and sports coaches. The sports activities we run encourage communication, co-ordination and teamwork. Everyone is encouraged to have a go and the name of the game is having fun!" For more information about the club, please contact Oaklands Sport Centre on 782841.
