14:01:03: York Residents get 'Tourist's Eye View' of the City

Posted on Tuesday 14 January 2003
York residents will be able to get a 'tourist's eye view' of the city thanks to the annual 'Residents First Weekend', supported by Science City York and organised by First Stop York, the council and local tourism industry partnership.

The Residents First Weekend on 25-26 January gives everyone in the city the chance to see the full range of attractions that York offers visitors.

More than fifty attractions, cafes and restaurants will be taking part in the largest event of its kind in the country, which traditionally brings thousands of residents into tourism establishments in the city.

Residents will also be able to sample the city's finest hospitality in some of York's top hotels. Monk Bar Hotel, Le Meridien and Quality Hotel are offering free dinner, bed and breakfast for two on the evening of January 25 to the winners of a competition run in association with the York Evening Press.

Councillor Bob Scrase, the council's executive member for community, economic development and commercial services, said: "The Residents First Weekend is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in York to explore the city's tourist attractions.

"It is the tourist industry's way of thanking the local community for their help in making York such a great venue for visitors. It also enables residents to act as ambassadors for the city when recommending places to visit to family and friends."

Ray Wynne, business promoter, Science City York, said: "Science City York is pleased to be associated with this year's Residents First Weekend. It's an ideal opportunity to increase awareness of the Science City initiative across the wider York community, and to promote the forthcoming Festival of Discovery which coincides with National Science Week in March."

To gain admission to participating venues, residents will need a valid York Card and proof of residency such as a utility bill or a driver's licence.

Details of how to obtain tickets for attractions with limited capacity are provided in the Residents First Weekend information leaflet which is available from all council receptions, libraries, tourist information centres and the YORtime office. Alternatively information is available on the web at www.yorkresidentsfirst.com

The event is supported by Science City York and organised by the First Stop York tourism partnership.
