03.02.03: Monk Bar Junction Work

Posted on Monday 3 February 2003
Work on upgrading traffic lights at key junctions in the city will continue this week with improvements at Monk Bar. The work will take place off-peak tomorrow (Tuesday, February 4), between 9.30am and 3pm, and is part of City of York Council's ongoing programme of improvements to the city's traffic signals to ensure they continue to function at peak efficiency and to minimise the possibilities of failures.

The work at Monk Bar will involve the full replacement of all of the signal heads and the associated cabling. The council will also be replacing the pedestrian push button units and taking the opportunity to instal special 'rotating cones' to help partially-sighted pedestrians to understand when it is safe to cross.

Traffic lights and pelican crossings at Nessgate, Pavement/Piccadilly and Tower Street will also be upgraded over the next few months as part of the council's rolling programme which costs about £40,000 annually.

The lights at Monk Bar will be switched off between 9.30am and 3pm with temporary four way lights in place for the duration of the work.

Peter Evely, the council's head of highways regulation, said, "Some traffic delays are to be expected at the junction tomorrow but this is important work to improve facilities for partially-sighted pedestrians and maximise reliability for the benefit of motorists."
