09.12.03: Right to Read project secures funding

Posted on Tuesday 9 December 2003
City of York Council's 'Right to Read' project has successfully secured funding for a third year.

The project has been running in York since Spring 2002 with funds granted by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation who have now given a further award until March 2005. 'Right to Read' is designed to help stimulate the enjoyment of reading for children looked after, using appropriate, accessible formats and aims to widen their social, educational and employment opportunities.

The project has created a number of activities and events including setting up starter libraries, a Reading Roadshow for carers and popular book buying sessions in Borders. Study support materials have also been provided for those taking GCSE's, and pupils starting reception class or Year 7.

The scheme has united Children's Services, who have matched funds by 25%, Libraries, foster carers, teachers and other partners in working to improve leisure and learning opportunities for looked after children. This third year will allow more support schemes to be implemented.

Alison Jones, senior librarian, Community Initiatives, City of York Council said: "We have had some overwhelmingly positive responses from children, parents and carers who have taken part in 'Right to Read' activities which have made a real difference to their lives. This third year of funding will provide a vital bridge to help different departments work together to continue to make these benefits available to looked after children in the future." Anyone who would like further information about the project should contact Nicky Copley, Right to Read project officer, on 01904 552800 or Alison Jones, senior librarian, Community Initiatives on 01904 552830.
