Members of City of York Council's Executive will discuss proposals to commission a detailed feasibility study to develop a new school, children's centre and open space, at their meeting on Tuesday, 16 December.
Redesigning and moving the school could provide space for up to 130 affordable housing and market value homes on the existing school and family centre sites aswell as the courner of fourth and sixth avenue.
The proposals aim to address the serious lack of affordable housing in the city and the large number of surplus places at Tang Hall Primary School - a situation which is likely to see the school at only 52 per cent of its capacity by 2006.
Any potential scheme could include a landswap between poorly used allotment land, which could see the school being able to use part of the allotments as a sports pitch.. The school's existing playing field at Melrosegate, which is separate from the main school building, could be used as public open space.
Patrick Scott, director of education and leisure, City of York Council, said: "This is potentially an incredibly exciting opportunity for Tang Hall. It is early and there are no firm proposals as yet. Our main priority now is to find out what local people think about the development."
If agreed, a project manager will be appointed to consult with the local community and school's governing body over their requirements before preparing a number of possible options for the scheme.
The specification for a possible scheme would include: A school for 3-11 year olds with capacity for a 180 nursery unit A school playing field next to the school building Appropriate facilities to replace the family centre Social housing as a proportion of toatl housing Appropriate provision of allotments
