Assessors from the Office for the Deputy Prime Minister will visit York today (Friday, 5 December) to meet representatives from the council and partner organisations. A decision will be made in April 2004.
If successful, the department will be expected to provide support and guidance to other authorities to help develop best practice and will receive additional government funding in recognition of its excellence.
The council's Early Years Service is one of 11 shortlisted for the Beacon Status award, which recognises the commitment of those working to ensure that all children have access to good quality childcare and education.
The service has also been shortlisted for an award in the 'Smarter Children's Services' and 'Making Childcare Sustainable' categories of the national Partners in Excellence Awards. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, 9 December.
