3.12.03: Disabled Go for York - International Day of Disabled People

Posted on Wednesday 3 December 2003
York's strategic partnership, Without Walls, is leading an ambitious plan to open up the city to disabled people.

The Without Walls Board has agreed to support a £25000 scheme to affiliate the city to a national website called 'Disabled Go.' The site provides information about the accessibility of buildings in a number of key cities, including Cardiff, Edinburgh and it is hoped that York will join the 15 other cities pioneering the scheme.

Julian Horsler, equality officer, City of York Council, said: "Lack of access to buildings means that thousands of disabled people are unable to use services or shops and have to rely on others for help. This project will enable information about over a thousand buildings and services in York to be available free of charge to people all over the world, whether they live and work in York or are just visiting. "It's a great way of giving disabled people the independence they want and helping to make the city more inclusive to all."

Information on the website would include whether a cinema offers wheelchair access, if a hotel has a vibrating fire alarm, which side of a museum's stairs the handrail is on or whether a solicitor will make home visits.
