As part of City of York Council's city-wide Easter holiday activities for children, the council's library service is playing is playing its part with its 'Lively in the Library' programme of events for children of all ages - including three Asian drumming sessions for older youngsters.
Clifton Library (11am to 11.45am), Burton Stone Community Centre (2.30pm to 3.15pm) and York Central Library (5.15pm to 6pm) are all hosting the drumming workshops next Thursday (April 4).
The workshops are aimed at youngsters between 11 and 16 years of age and are being run by Asian drummer Satnam Singh. Satnam owns several huge drums and wears one of them slung over his back to play with both hands free.
Youngsters getting involved in the workshops will get to practise drumming rhythms and techniques. Each will have something to hit so they learn to develop own skills and get a taste of that instrument
Senior librarian Alison Jones, said, "The buzz is quite something. Asian drumming is a lively stimulating activity which improves co-ordination and rhythm and helps learning about co-operating within in a group.
"It also enhances appreciation of other cultures and gives young people enjoyable experiences in libraries which help build a positive relationship with them, providing a much-needed alternative to the image that libraries are dull places where everyone has to keep a deathly silence!
"The sessions really are quite something and our message to children is come and make a big noise by joining in one of these spectacular workshops. We are thrilled to welcome Satnam back to York to see if we can blow the roof off!"
Places for the drumming sessions are limited although tickets are available free from the hosting library. Tickets for the drumming session at Burton Stone Community Centre are available from Steve Rouse on 07767 318088.
Alison said, "Warning: these events are loud and provide serious enjoyment!"
