The worried callers are complaining they have received a telephone call from a company which falsely claims it is working in conjunction with the local police.
The salesperson asks if the homeowner is aware that there has been a rise in crime in their street or area and suggests that a salesperson working in the area could call within the hour to discuss home security. When challenged to provide further details the salesperson puts the phone down.
York trading standards has also received reports of another firm working in the area which appears to be targeting older residents and offering free alarms. However, residents report that when the salesman calls they find they are required to sign a three year contract for a monthly maintenance fee.
Elizabeth Levett, the council's trading standards manager, said. "Reputable firms do not act in such an unprofessional way. Any firm which makes false claims about being approved by the local police, uses scare mongering tactics to alarm residents about local crime statistics or makes misleading claims about the price of their products is to be avoided.
"Our message to residents is: don't be pressurized into buying products and services you do not want and may not be able to afford.
"If you agree to a salesperson's visit be prepared for a 'hard sell' and don't sign anything until you are absolutely sure about what you are committing yourself to. If you have any problems contact Trading Standards on 01904 551562".
