The contract is due to last ten weeks and involves strengthening the bridge to carry 40 tonne lorries, blast cleaning and repainting all the metalwork and waterproofing the two footways on the bridge.
The works are being carried out by the council's Commercial Services Organisation. Head of the council's engineering consultancy, Ray Chaplin, said "There will be no disruption to traffic due to these works, as nothing is being done in the carriageway. Pedestrian access across the bridge and use of the cycleway will be maintained at all times".
