04.03.02: York Households Urged to Recycle Old Yellow Pages

Posted on Monday 4 March 2002
Households across York are being urged to participate in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign, which starts when the new edition of the York directory - sporting fluffy chicks on the front cover - is delivered across the area.

The campaign is being run by City of York Council and supported by The Directory Recycling Scheme which is sponsored by Yellow Pages. The aim is to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages - featuring fish on the front cover - and recycle them in special collection banks.

From the March to the end of May, banks clearly marked for Yellow Pages recycling will be sited at the following locations:

Foss Islands Road household waste site Towthorpe household waste site Safeway's, Acomb

All Yellow Pages will be collected by Blackburns Waste Disposal who will send them to paper mills to be recycled into paper.

Sara Goodhead, waste development assistant with City of York Council, said: "Throughout York there is the potential to save about 78,000 Yellow Pages from landfill. We hope that having these special banks will be a great encouragement to our residents to recycle their old Yellow Pages."

Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of The Directory Recycling Scheme, said: "Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their directory along to one of the recycling banks."

Further information can be obtained from The Directory Recycling Scheme leaflet, delivered with this year's Yellow Pages. Alternatively, contact the Recycling Team, City of York Council, on 01904 551579 or email: recycling.team@york.gov.uk.
