19.06.02: Can You Kick It? Challenge to Footie Girls

Posted on Tuesday 18 June 2002
Girl footie fans in York will get the chance on Saturday (June 22) to celebrate England's progression to the semi-final of the World Cup - or take their frustration out on the ball if Brazil beat Beckham and the Boys to it.

With the World Cup in full swing, girl football fans in York are being challenged to 'Bend it like Beckham' - just like they do in the film - at a Football Fun Day organised by the City of York Girls' Football League.

Saturday's fun day, for girls between the ages of eight and 16, is being staged between 10.30am and 3pm at Hopgrove playing fields on Malton Road to give girl enthusiasts the chance to try out their soccer skills.

The event includes coaching for all abilities and a chance to join in a match with side-shows and refreshments available. The highlight will be a tournament involving several local girls' clubs. Entrance is free and girls can just turn up on the day.

The event is being supported by the City of York Council and local clubs and Mark Wilson, the council's community leisure officer, said "Football for girls has really taken off in York with the establishment of a new league last season.

"This September there will be a new under 14s division as well as under 12s and under 16s. There are more opportunities now than ever for girls to play football in York."

There are now six clubs in York for girls: Heworth, Poppleton, Wigginton Grasshoppers, New Earswick, York Ladies and Rawcliffe. They will be joined by Killinghall Nomads (Harrogate) and Tadcaster Albion in Saturday's tournament.

"Lots of schools in the area have also taken an interest in developing the game for girls recently, " said Mark, "So start preparing for World Cup 2011 - the women's one, of course - by turning up on Saturday!"
