17.06.02: Clifton Green Double in Open Air Chess Challenge

Posted on Sunday 16 June 2002
Clifton Green Primary School swept the board with two wins in this year's open air chess challenge at Parliament Street, York, at the weekend.

The primary school won both junior sections in the event which is held annually and organised by York and District Chess Association in conjunction with City of York Council's city centre management team.

In the senior, secondary school, sections there was a win each for Oaklands and Canon Lee schools.

The tournament is staged for the best young chess players in the York area. The young players contest the annual championships in four age groups and qualify for the two-day open air event by virtue of their past performances at local chess events over the past season. This year there were 64 qualifiers.

Lord Mayor of York Councillor David Horton attended the event on Saturday and Sunday to present prizes to all the winners and the runners up.

Council city centre officer John Wood said, "The competition this year was as keen as ever. This is a regular feature in the city centre events calendar and attracted a large audience of family, friends, shoppers and tourists."
