10.06.02: School's Golden Jubilee Banner at Art Gallery

Posted on Sunday 9 June 2002
A spectacular banner designed and made by the pupils of Tang Hall Primary School will go on show at York City Art Gallery this month as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee Relay for the Commonwealth Games.

Working with City of York Council's Arts Service, a challenge was set by York City Art Gallery to the city's primary schools to design a banner representing their impressions of York. The response was overwhelming, with a huge variety of imaginative and colourful designs entered.

York City Art Gallery exhibitions officer Ros MacDonald said, "The choice of a winner was very difficult but after much deliberation Tang Hall Primary School's design was declared the winner, with its cleverly observed narrative, attention to detail and use of different materials."

Pupils aged five to 11 from Tang Hall Primary have been working with local artists Anne Hutchinson and Jacqueline James to make their design into a full-scale, professional textile banner. It will feature at the gallery between Tuesday, June 18 and Saturday, July 7.

Councillor Janet Looker, the council's executive member for education, said, "This was a tough competition and all the schools who entered made a wonderful contribution to this once-in-a-lifetime event. Now, with the help of Anne Hutchinson and Jacqueline James, the Tang Hall School children will have the chance to see their design come to life.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing it on display and hope that parents, school staff, residents and visitors will take the opportunity to enjoy this superb contribution to the Queen's Golden Jubilee."
