The Tower Street local safety scheme, which provided segregated routes for cyclists from Skeldergate Bridge to Tower Street, has led to a significant fall in accidents. Between 1995 and 1997 there were twelve recorded accidents, including eight involving cyclists. Since the scheme was introduced in May 2000 there have only been two accidents, one involving a cyclist.
Councillor Tracey Simpson Laing, executive member for transport, said: "I am delighted by these figures, which show that the council's investment in road safety can make a real difference to people's lives. This year we're investing £750,000 in a range of safety measures designed to bring about a massive improvement in road safety for York, for all road users."
Across York there has been a 10 per cent fall in road accidents from the 1994-1998 average to 2000. There are a number of local safety schemes planned across the city for this year, including:
