23.07.02: Children perform rock opera 'Tommy'

Posted on Monday 22 July 2002
Gifted and talented pupils from York schools will combine their skills in a stunning multi-media interpretation of Pete Townsend's 'Tommy' on July 26th at the National Centre for Early Music with performances at 4pm and 7.30pm.

The 50 strong cast aged between 11 and 18 years old have been busy rehearsing dance, drama, music and video to prepare for an exciting and dynamic show that demonstrates the strength and rawness of Pete Townsend's music.

Tommy is being produced by City of York Council's arts service with a team of professional musicians, artists and dancers together with Scapegoat Productions.

David Ashworth, music consultant for the arts service, said: "This is the first time that Tommy has been produced with a cast of children and it is amazing what they have achieved in an intensive week of rehearsals. The production's choral approach proves that rock music is flexible and powerful enough to work - not just for a 3 minute song, but on an operatic scale."

Tickets are available through the arts service on 01904 554660 at a cost of £4 each.
