24.01.02: 90 Percent Backing for Automatic Bollard Scheme

Posted on Thursday 24 January 2002
Residents are backing City of York Council's proposals to provide more reliable bus services for Poppleton and a much needed service for Poppleton Business Park and Poppleton Park.

The council is proposing to put an automatic bollard at the end of Low Poppleton Lane, near Manor CE School, to improve access to Poppleton for local people.

The proposals are part of City of York Council's transport strategy which aims to encourage the use of public transport and improve safety.

A consultation exercise, which is still open to residents and businesses, has so far generated thirty seven e-mails - with thirty four of these giving full backing to the automatic bollard scheme - and six letters, with five of these in favour. So far 90 percent of respondents have backed the scheme.

Dan Johnson, the council's TravelWise officer, said, "The council has already appointed Sustrans, the national cycling charity, to work with Manor School on a safe routes to school project which will see a range a measures introduced to improve children's safety. These will follow on from the recently built Millfield Lane off road cycle path."

The new bus route will include a bus stop outside the school on Low Poppleton Lane which means that children will not longer have to cross the busy and potentially very dangerous Boroughbridge Road.

On the automatic bollard proposals, Colin Knight, head of the council's transport planning unit said, "The scheme will make bus journeys faster and more reliable and importantly will provide better bus services for local people".

City of York Council is happy to listen to comments on this proposal from residents and businesses. Comments can be sent to Bus route Improvement Consultation, City of York Council, 9, St. Leonard's Place, YORK, YO1 7ET or e.mailed to busroute.improvements@york.gov.uk
