The current 476 capacity car park will be reduced to 218 spaces to cater for the new coach park and much-improved toilet facility.
During the phased construction period, there will be occasions when car parking capacity is reduced to well below the 218 car parking spaces to enable re-development of the car parking areas. The existing Clarence Street coach park will remain open until the new Union Terrace coach park is available.
Visitors and residents are being asked to use alternatives to Union Terrace car park, such as the Park and Ride or Foss Bank car park. Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride now has an additional 250 car parking spaces ready for an increase in demand and nearby car parks, such as Monk Bar or Foss Bank, are currently under-used. The council will erect signs on the surrounding road network to direct drivers to Foss Bank car park.
Dan Johnson, the council's TravelWise officer said; "Anyone concerned about travelling into York can get information on Park and Ride or bus times and routes from the council's Bus Info service direct on 01904 551400. Information regarding other car park locations in the city can also be obtained from the council's website at www.york.gov.uk or from the Tourist Information Centre on 01904 621756."
