20.02.02: Major Improvements for Stonegate

Posted on Wednesday 20 February 2002
One of York's most historic streets is to have a much-needed make-over during the next three weeks. Broken and loose Yorkstone paving along Stonegate will be replaced by the City Council's Highways engineers starting on Monday (February 25).

Working hours will be restricted within the 'footstreets' period between 10.30am and 4.30pm to minimise disruption of vehicular access and deliveries.

The council's Head of Engineering Consultancy, Ray Chaplin, said "We appreciate the inconvenience caused to residents, visitors and traders when undertaking necessary repairs in busy City Centre areas, so we will be using a special rapid hardening cement to bed the stonework in. This will enable this popular thoroughfare to return to normal operation with minimum delay. Pedestrians will continue to have access down Stonegate while the repaving is going on."
