12.02.02: York Flood Latest - Flood Group Stood Down

Posted on Tuesday 12 February 2002
The following statement on predicted flooding in York was issued today at 4.30pm.

The Environment Agency have revised down their estimate of a peak in the River Ouse in York to 4.25 metres at 5.00pm today. The agency also predicts that the river will have reduced to 3.6 metres by 7.00am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

Precautionary measures are in place in the city, including a limited amount of sandbagging for a small number of residential properties, and checks on roads and the flood defences will continue throughout the evening.

Only a dozen or so properties (including commercial premises) are likely to be affected by flooding and a small number of roads, including access into Naburn village. A few bus services will be affected, but services should be back to normal by Wednesday morning.

The continuing advice to drivers is that a lot of damage is caused by vehicles driving through flood waters too quickly, and drivers should take care when driving in these situations, as it is dangerous for them and for those properties affected by any wash.

The council and other support services will continue to monitor defences and roads throughout the evening and night.

Note to editors: The York flood control group have no further plans to meet, given the current predictions of river levels.
