12.02.02: Statement on predicted flooding in York, 8.25am

Posted on Tuesday 12 February 2002
York's flood control group met again this morning and following the update from the Environment Agency of a peak of 4.4 metres late afternoon today, preparations continue to be made in the city.

The measures include a limited amount of sandbagging for a small number of residential properties, and checks on roads and the flood defences will continue throughout the day. The A19 south will be monitored this afternoon and bus services will continue running.

The advice to drivers is that a lot of damage is caused by vehicles driving through flood waters too quickly, and drivers should take care when driving in these situations, as it is dangerous for themselves and for those houses affected by any wash.

The control group will meet again this afternoon, when the Environment Agency will provide an update on the flood level. We continue to monitor defences and roads.
