07.02.02: Ward Committee Funds Skate Ramp

Posted on Thursday 7 February 2002
A new skate ramp has been provided for youngsters in parts of Bootham and Clifton - thanks to the local City of York Council-backed ward committee.

The ramp, at Burton Stone Community Centre, is now open after school and at the weekends after Clifton Central and Bootham West Ward Committee agreed to fund the work.

Supported by senior Clifton youth worker Steve Rouse a group of young people in Clifton applied to for funding to build a skate ramp in the area,

The ward committee decided to award the project a grant of £378 last April towards the cost in response to many local residents ranking the scheme a top local priority. The young people chose the ramp and helped to build it.

The project is particularly unusual because the young people have been involved in every stage of the development.

Steve Rouse, said, "We've proved that if you give young people a chance to take part, they are very willing and enthusiastic to do so."

The ramp will be formally unveiled at a Clifton Central and Bootham West Ward Committee event next Wednesday (February 13) at 4pm.
