Former Heworth, Hull and Great Britain star Gary Divorty and Leeds Rhinos youngster Peter Fox, from Acomb, turned up outside York Minster this morning to unveil the £5 'big ticket' for the nine-a-side tournament. The rugby league festival is being held to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee and will bring teams from the rest of the UK, Ireland and France to hosts Heworth RLFC on bank holiday Monday, June 3.
For just £5 the 'big ticket' allows two adults and up to four children to attend the day-long tournament which is backed by City of York Council and the Rugby Football League.
There are also two other ticket prices for individuals - £3 for adults and £1 for the under-16s. Tickets will be available at the gate on the day but are also on sale now from the council's YORtime Resource Centre, 20 Back Swinegate (telephone 01904 553440). The tickets will also include an offer from ticket sponsors McDonald's.
The tournament organisers also revealed today that free car parking has been arranged for the event at sites adjacent to the Heworth RLFC ground.
Liz Topi, City of York Council's events officer, said as well as providing a festival of rugby league the tournament would provide a day of entertainment for the whole family.
She said, "As well as the main, Fairfax Cup tournament, there will also be the final of the York schools Marston Moor Cup and we have arranged a range of off-pitch attractions."
Off-the-field attractions include: Super League mascots Ronnie the Rhino and Bully the Bull in 'personal appearances' roundabouts bouncy castle face painting a number of food stalls offering everything from burgers to paella licensed bar ice cream rugby league merchandising stalls afternoon teas Members of both the Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos squads will also be in attendance on the day. Gary Divorty and Peter Fox were joined at today's festival photocall by Spen Allison, manager of the York Ironsides - the invitation squad specially-created for next month's event. Gary, who was born in and played for Heworth before signing for Hull in the 1980s, was a two test Great Britain international. He scored a try in one of the great Wembley Challenge Cup finals when Hull lost 28-24 to Wigan in 1985. He said, "York Golden Jubilee Rugby League Festival is a wonderful idea and I especially think the Marston Moor Cup for York schools will give the sport a tremendous boost in the city.'' Leeds Rhinos academy back Peter Fox from Acomb has already represented England at under-16 level and is product of York Acorn RLFC. The 17-year-old former Manor School student is one of the players in the Ironsides' preliminary squad of 26 players and said, "'' I am honoured to represent the city of York in the shape of the Ironsides and think the event will be a great success''. Next month's event has an English Civil War theme and 15 teams will join the Ironsides to play for the Fairfax Cup. The York Ironsides are named in honour of the city's history in support of Oliver Cromwell's Roundhead forces during the English Civil War.
Councillor Alan Jones, the council's executive member for leisure and heritage, said, "Everything is being lined up to make this a truly memorable day in the history of the game in York. The council is playing a key role in ensuring it will be a fun and action-packed event for all the family."
