17.10.01: Minsterwomen in Minstermen Shootout

Posted on Friday 2 November 2001
One of York's newest women'tball teams will be celebrating a novel sponsorship deal on Saturday (October 20) by providing the half-time entertainment at York City'tham Crescent.

The Clifton Vipers have been together for over a year and are made up of women and girls from the Clifton area. They will be performing a penalty shoot out during the break in the Minstermen'e against Southend United.

The team has recently signed a sponsorship deal with the North Clifton Regeneration Project - the Government and City of York Council-funded initiative designed to improve the quality of life for residents in Clifton with improved access to education, employment, health, housing and leisure opportunities.

Clifton Vipers is the latest community sports team to benefit from regeneration project kit sponsorship with Kingsway Riders youth football club, Burton Stone AFC and Clifton Ladies Netball team also benefiting in the same way. The regeneration project pays for the kits with the all the shirts carrying the NCRP logo.

Tanya Lyon, North Clifton Regeneration Project coordinator, said the sponsorship was a way of encouraging community spirit and promoting the benefits of exercise and keeping fit.

She said, "North Clifton Regeneration Project is proud to sponsor the team which has gone from strength to strength since they began in July last year. Women'tball is becoming increasingly popular, both as a recreational activity and in the competitive arena. We wish the team every success for the future".

Clifton Vipers manager Tamara Addison said "We are looking forward to showing off our shooting skills on Saturday and we are excited about being in front of a large crowd on a proper Football League pitch.

"Being involved in Clifton Vipers gives us an opportunity to have a break from everyday routine, meet new people and gain a sense of achievement, and of course, it'reat way to keep fit! The sponsorship is vital because every sports organisation needs a certain amount of funding to pay for kit, travelling and so on."

The team is always on the look out for new players. Training is on Wednesdays between 6pm and 8pm and Sundays between 10am and noon. Anyone interested should telephone Tamara on 01904 655439.

Clifton Vipers are following up their Bootham Crescent appearance with a fund raising event around the corner at the Burton Stone pub on Friday week (October 26) featuring fancy dress and camel racing.
