Aquatics Strategy

What is the Aquatics Strategy?

York Aquatics Strategy 2013 can be downloaded from the right of the page.  It is a document which has been written to help drive the future growth of aquatic sports and activities in York.

It includes a wide range of different water based activities (from swimming to underwater hockey) for everyone, whatever their age or ability.

What does the strategy do?

The vision of the York Aquatic Strategy is for

"York to be a city that offers the widest possible range of aquatic opportunities, so that more people can be more active, more often"

The strategy aims to get more people involved in aquatics in York and to enable better performance in various water activities.  It also aims to provide wider opportunities for everyone.

Who has been involved in the strategy?

The strategy and action plan have been written by council officers, in close consultation with the Aquatics Forum.  The Aquatics Forum was set up in 2008 as the community voice for aquatics and the partners in the forum are:

  • York City Baths Club
  • New Earswick Swimming Club
  • Team Jorvik Swimming Club
  • Ebor Lifesaving Club
  • York University Swimming and Water Polo Club
  • York St John Swimming Club
  • York University
  • Energise
  • Yearsley Pool
  • St Peters School
  • Sport & Active Leisure Sports Development Officers
  • Amateur Swimming Association

The forum will continue to provide ideas and specialist knowledge and each organisation will play their part in making the plans happen.

The regional background

In addition to York's strategy, a regional strategy has been produced called Aquatic Ambitions 2013.  All eight districts in North Yorkshire - Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmonshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby and York - have together produced this strategy.  Its purpose is to summarise the collective ambition of all eight areas and to work in partnership to develop aquatics across North Yorkshire and York. Visit the ASA website and select the partners tab to find the full strategy document.
