Is our hydrotherapy pool suitable for you?

Our hydrotherapy suite may be hired by customers who cannot access the main and learner swimming pool programme.

However if you are a disabled swimmer you may find that we have suitable sessions for you in the main and learner pools.  For example we have have two warm water sessions (not in the hydro pool) called "swimability sessions" where the water temperature is increased to 30 degrees.  This session is designed for people with disabilities and their carers in a friendly and safe environment. A poolside hoist and easy access steps are available and these sessions take place every Monday from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and every Sunday from 3pm to 4pm.  The cost is only £2.30 and your carer goes free.

What type of hydrotherapy pool is it?

The hydrotherapy pool measures 3.5m x 7m and is 1.1m to 1.3m in depth.  The water temperature is maintained at 34 degrees with the air temperature balanced to match.

The suite consists of two high dependency private changing rooms, all connected by an overhead hoist system, taking users to showers, toilets and directly over the pool.  Adjustable height changing trolleys are also available for easy changing and showering.

Access into the pool is made easy with three different options:

1. Easy walk in steps with both left and right handrails
2. Seated pool hoist
3. Overhead hoist system for use with slings (carer to operate)

The hydrotherapy pool can also provide a sensory experience with sound and light effects including:

• Aqua projector which projects numerous shapes, colours, images and even pictures
• Aqua Twirler which projects a variety of slowly rotating coloured shapes onto the walls, floors and even through to the bottom of the pool, creating a soothing atmosphere.
• Aqua Colour Changer which floods the pool with colour or which can be changed to a focused beam
• Aqua Water Switch which is a waterproof button floating in the water to allow you to change the light modes above

All the equipment you need can be provided and includes wheelchairs, shower chairs, hoists, floats and floatation devices for use within the pool.  Please note that slings are not provided and we recommend users bring two slings with them, as one will get wet!

How do I book and when is it available?

The hydrotherapy pool is used every Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm by adults with learning disabilities.  This programme is managed by City of York Council's Adult Learning Disability Services.  For more information about this service contact Tina Woof - Service Leader on 07825720666 or email tina.woof@york.gov.uk

Bookings are currently available for a maximum of 4 users in the pool at once (2 users and 2 careers/ support workers/physiotherapists), but we require a lead name for booking and payment purposes.

A hire charge of £19.80 per hour includes:

• The hire of the complete hydrotherapy suite for one hour
• All equipment from hoists to floats in the pool
• A lifeguard to supervise the session
