A Sports Funding Newsletter is produced quarterly and the latest issue is available to download from this page. Please email us if you would like to receive this newsletter regularly or require any further assistance.

City of York Council funding opportunities are detailed below:

The Edmund Wilson Trust Fund

Background

Mr Edmund Wilson was born in 1824 in York. He was a keen swimmer who, during his life, supported the moves to teach people to swim as well as financially helping galas in the city. When he died he left a considerable sum of money to the City of York to be awarded as grants to help the improvement of swimming in the local area.

Benefactors of the grants in the past have been voluntary aquatics clubs like York City Baths Club, Ebor Life Saving Club and New Earswick Swimming Club.

The Edmund Wilson Trust Fund is controlled and administered by City of York Council on behalf of, and in keeping with, the last will and testament of Mr Edmund Wilson. Grants are given out annually for the instruction, promotion and encouragement of swimming, diving and life saving in York. The level of grant available each year is not fixed, as it is dependant on the level of interest made against the savings fund.  We anticipate that up to £1,000 per year will be available.

Criteria

Grants will be accepted from voluntary organisations who deliver services with in the York area. Grants must meet one or all of the following criteria:

  • Instruction of swimming, diving and life saving, i.e. learn to swim and life saving classes
  • Promotion of swimming, diving and life saving
  • Upkeep of swimming pools or other facilities which offer access for swimming, diving, life saving

The T A Wain Legacy Swimming Fund

Background

During his life Mr T A Wain was an ambassador for local swimming and supported the moves to encourage children from less affluent areas and low income homes to participate in swimming across the city. When he died he left a sum of money to be used to buy swimming tickets, allowing these children living in York free access to swimming. Each year City of York Council donates some of this money to individuals and organisations to carry on T A Wain's hard work and legacy.

The T A Wain Legacy Swimming Fund is controlled and administered by City of York Council on behalf of, and in keeping with, the last will and testament of Mr T A Wain.  Free swimming is given out accordingly to children and young people aged up to 18 years for participation in swimming at Yearsley and Energise Pools.
