Archaeological projects in York are normally carried out by independent archaeological contractors. The archaeological contractor will usually be commissioned, and paid for, by whoever is responsible for making a planning application.
The council does not recommend or approve archaeological contractors but we can provide a list of archaeological units and individuals that have either worked, or expressed an interest in working, in York. Contact us to receive a list.
The scale and nature of an archaeological project is defined by a document called an Archaeological Scheme of Investigation. It is usually prepared by the City of York Archaeologist. If your archaeological project forms part of your planning application then you can contact us to request an Archaeological Scheme of Investigation.
