Archaeological projects in York are normally carried out by independent archaeological contractors. The archaeological contractor will usually be commissioned, and paid for, by whoever is responsible for making a planning application.

The council does not recommend or approve archaeological contractors but we can provide a list of archaeological units and individuals that have either worked, or expressed an interest in working, in York. Contact us to receive a list.

The scale and nature of an archaeological project is defined by a document called an Archaeological Scheme of Investigation. It is usually prepared by the City of York Archaeologist.
