Bookstart

  • Bookstart aims to provide a free pack of books to every baby in the UK.
  • This gift can create a love of reading in your child and offer them a flying start in life.
  • Bookstart is a national scheme, based on a partnership of librarians, health professionals, early years and other partners.  For more information see Bookstart.

Bookstart for babies

For babies aged 0-12 months

  • This free pack contains two board books and a book of nursery rhymes, advice on sharing books, information about libraries and a strong canvas bag.
  • Packs are usually given out to babies at around 7 to 9 months by their health visitor.  If you didn't receive a pack at that health check please ask at your local library.

Bookstart+

For toddlers aged 18-30 months

  • This free pack contains a brightly-coloured nylon satchel, two books, a colouring pad, a pack of crayons, a bedroom frieze, a set of bookplates, a book list, and a guidance book for parents and carers.
  • You can receive the Bookstart+ pack from your health visitor if your toddler is aged 18-30 months. Otherwise please ask at your local library, but remember to take your health record book along with you.

My Bookstart Treasure Chest

For children aged 36-48 months

  • The treasure chest has a wooden effect like a pirate's chest, it's beautifully illustrated and has a hidden compartment for keeping books and drawings.  It contains picture books, stickers, a pad and pencils.
  • Most children will receive their treasure chest via their early years setting - i.e. a pre-school playgroup or nursery.  If your child doesn't attend such a group, or is minded at home or with a childminder, you can pick up a pack at a library.

For more information contact Lynne Sage, our Bookstart Officer, on 0770 637598.
