York Explore building work 2014
Builders will be working at York Explore from January until October/November 2014
There will be some substantial building work taking place at York Explore in 2014 due to the York: Gateway to History project, a £1.77m project to create a 21st century Archive at York Explore which has been made possible by a £1.6m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
We have designed a phased programme of construction to keep disruption to a minimum but there will be some changes to our service over the next twelve months.
January to March 2014
Access to some areas will be restricted. At times there will be construction noise.
A hoarding will be built around the construction area on the ground floor, which includes the Children’s Library and parts of the Cafe. We will be changing the layout of the library to work around it.
The Cafe will be open and accessible from the foyer.
The Children’s Library is directly beneath the new extension. It will be moved into the central area on the ground floor. There will be one Storytime each week.
Some non-fiction titles will be moved to the Archives and Local History room on the first floor. This space will still be available for computer access and study.
The reduced Local History library will be available in the Marriott Room.
Access to computers or wifi will be as normal.
Toilets, including a disabled access toilet will be open on the first floor. Our Changing Places facility will be temporarily unavailable.
20th March to end May 2014
The ground floor and Cafe will be open but the first floor including the toilets will be closed for refurbishment.
June to early November 2014
We anticipate that York Explore will close fully for the final, most disruptive phase of the building works in early June 2014, reopening in early November 2014. We will increase opening hours at our other libraries during the closure.
Please note that all of the dates above are provisional and may change. They are based on our contractor’s current timetable.
