York Explore building work 2014

Builders will be working at York Explore from January until October/November 2014

There will be some substantial building work taking place at York Explore in 2014 due to the York: Gateway to History project, a £1.77m project to create a 21st century Archive at York Explore which has been made possible by a £1.6m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We have designed a phased programme of construction to keep disruption to a minimum but there will be some changes to our service over the next twelve months.

January to March 2014

Access to some areas will be restricted.  At times there will be construction noise.

A hoarding will be built around the construction area on the ground floor, which includes the Children’s Library and parts of the Cafe.  We will be changing the layout of the library to work around it.

  • The Cafe will be open and accessible from the foyer.
  • The Children’s Library is directly beneath the new extension.  It will be moved into the central area on the ground floor. There will be one Storytime each week.
  • Some non-fiction titles will be moved to the Archives and Local History room on the first floor.  This space will still be available for computer access and study.
  • The reduced Local History library will be available in the Marriott Room.
  • Access to computers or wifi will be as normal.
  • Toilets, including a disabled access toilet will be open on the first floor.  Our Changing Places facility will be temporarily unavailable.

20 March to end May 2014

The ground floor and Cafe will be open but the first floor including the toilets will be closed for refurbishment.

The daily time allowance on the York Explore PCs will be temporarily reduced to 1 hour from Monday 7 April 2014. This is because there will be fewer PCs available, and we need to allocate the resources fairly among customers.

June to early November 2014

York Explore will be closed for the next stage of our major refurbishment from Sunday 1st June 2014 until Autumn 2014

During the closure of York Explore we will be extending the opening hours of Acomb Explore, Haxby Explore and Tang Hall Explore.

From Monday 9th June the additional opening hours will be:

Acomb Explore - Wednesdays 9am to 5pm, Saturday opening will be extended to 4pm, Sundays 11am to 3pm

Haxby Explore - Thursdays 9am to 6pm

Tang Hall Explore - Wednesday opening will be extended to 5.30pm

Alternatively you could try Sycamore House (click for location details) which has a great selection of books and a lovely cafe so feel free to pop in, have a browse, and enjoy a cup of tea with a slice of cake.

Please note that all of the dates above are provisional and may change. They are based on our contractor’s current timetable.
