Joining the library

Who can join the library?

You are very welcome to become a member of York Libraries. There are no age limits - anyone from one day old to 120+ years old can join.

What are YorkCards?

If you live within the York area you are entitled to have a YorkCard, which means that your library card will also entitle you to residents' discounts at leisure facilities across York. There is a £2 admin charge for YorkCards for adult residents. If you prefer you may choose to have a library card without the YorkCard, which is free.

Why should I join?

Anybody can come into the libraries without joining to find some information, ask a question, read newspapers or find a comfortable space to read or study. If you join you can also:

How do I join?

All you need to do is go to your local library. We will give you your library card straight away. You will be able to use it at any City of York library. You will also be given a Personal Identity Number (PIN) for using the online library catalogue, the 24/7 telephone renewals line and the computers in the libraries. You may change this number if you wish.

Please note that the online joining form is temporarily unavailable. You can save time at the library by downloading a registration form from this page. Please fill it in and bring it with you when you come to the library to join. Please note that the second page of the form is the "Equalities Monitoring form" and this is optional. Any information you provide on it will be kept strictly confidential, and only council employees will use it to monitor and improve our services. If you're happy to fill this in then please do so.
