Making changes in a conservation area

If you want to change anything in a conservation area, such as uproot a tree or alter a footpath, extra planning controls may apply. You usually need conservation area consent to demolish buildings or walls but if your planned change involves a tree you need to apply for permission to carry out work on a tree. You may also need planning permission if you want to put up or alter a structure in a conservation area.

You can download the following guides on the right hand side of this page.

Living in a conservation area

This guide will answer most frequently asked questions. If after reading it you are still not sure if you need planning permission, or if you are affected by conservation area status, contact the planning department directly. You should be particularly careful if you want to do work on a listed building.

Conservation area planning controls

You can download detailed information about conservation area planning controls but you may wish to take advice from a planning officer before you proceed with any work.

Conservation area consent

If you need to apply for conservation area consent download and complete the form and return five copies of it to Plans Processing Unit.
