Holding an event in York

If you want to hold an event in York you will need to make sure that you satisfy certain legal requirements as well as those for health and safety and traffic management.

There may also be a cost to hold the event. The cost depends on the type of event and the organiser.

Where to hold an event

City centre

If you want to hold an event in the city centre of York contact the City Centre Office.

Council owned open spaces

If you want to hold an event on a council owned open space, such as the Knavesmire or a park, contact the Events Officer.

What happens next?

Once a space has been agreed you will be sent an application form for completion. Following confirmation of the event a contract will be agreed.

These guides should be read in addition to any legal requirements and government guidance.

The City of York Event Safety Advisory Group was set up to help ensure the safety of all public events held in the city. It offers safety advice to event organisers before events are held.

The group is made up of representatives from:

  • City of York Council
  • The Police
  • The Highway Authority
  • The Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service
  • North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
