Visitors to York’s Museums have risen by 254,000 following the creation of a new partnership between City of York Council and a specially-created group called York Museums’ Trust.

In 2002, the Trust was set up as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status to ensure the long term stability and prosperity of the city’s world-class museums and collections. Besides reversing a downward trend in footfall, the Trust has been able to bid for new funding sources thanks to its charitable status, and the Council’s financial input has reduced from 50 per cent in 2002 to 30 per cent in 2011. Indeed the Trust has raised £7 million to upgrade its buildings, gardens and collections, visited by 112,000 residents in the last year – and all free of charge.

The partnership approach has also opened up more opportunities for local involvement and the Trust now works with over 200 active volunteers and hosts over 20 student placements each year.
