National fire safety guidance

National guidance on fire safety within residential accommodation was launched on 23 July 2008.  The guidance applies nationally and covers certain existing residential accommodation including single family dwellings, shared houses, bed-sit and flats where there is 'normal/average' occupancy.

The guidance adopts a risk based approach to fire safety that satisfies both the Housing Act 2004 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and includes guidance for landlords on how to carry out fire risk assessments.

A PDF version of the guidance can be downloaded from this page.

We are currently working with neighbouring authorities and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service with a view to providing further guidance on the document, having regard to the housing stock within the city.

In the meantime landlords, managing agents, and tenants with queries on the new guidance and/or advice on fire safety within individual properties should contact Housing Standards and Adaptations using the contact details above.
