There are 35 self-contained flats, 21 are in the main building. There is lift and stair access to the first and second floors. The other 14 flats are arranged around the communal car park, and have a stair lift to the first floor. Most flats have one bedroom, some have two. Four have adapted kitchens for wheelchair users. Most have balconies, all have a telephone point, television socket and central heating.
The building is fully covered by a fire alarm system with smoke detectors in all corridors, and each flat is fitted with a fire detector.
Outside there are pleasant gardens, and allotment plots for the energetic.
Some shared parking is available.
The common room is used by a day club two days per week, the community church holds monthly services there, and various outside traders hold events. A luncheon club is held on alternate Tuesdays, there is a regular Friday fish and chips event, and weekly in-house bingo. Outside outings are also arranged, sometimes with other sheltered housing schemes.
Tenants' meetings are held regularly. Alex Lyon House is in the area covered by Heworth Without Residents' Association.
