Empty properties

The council works to resolve the issues behind a home being left empty so it may be brought back in to use. If there is a home in your neighbour hood that has been left empty and you are concerned about it we want to know about it.

We work to reduce the number of empty privately owned properties by:

  • responding to enquires and complaints from local residents about empty properties
  • providing advice and grant assistance to the owners of empty properties with the aim of retuning the properties in to use.

How you can help

We need to hear from you to find owners of empty homes across the city. You can report empty properties using the form to the right.

Return forms to: Housing Standards & Adaptations, PO Box 402, Customer Advice Centre, George Hudson Street, York YO1 6ZE

If you own an empty property

We provide help to owners of empty properties by offering advice and grant assistance. Find our more about our grants by downloading the empty property grants guidance from the right of this page.

If the owner of an empty property does not work with the council or makes insufficient effort to return empty property we may be left with no option but to take formal action. You can download our full policy on empty homes from the right of this page.
