Homelessness - help and advice

Our main policy is to offer advice and information to help you stay in your own home.

Where to get advice

The advice and information team and the homeless prevention team will look at your situation and give you advice about tenancy rights, illegal evictions, money and debt, mediation and counselling.

They will inform you about other housing options, including how to apply for shared ownership, social housing through York Housing Register, the Allocations Policy, the private rental sector and supported housing.

If you are being taken to court for mortgage arrears, rent arrears or nuisance behaviour you should contact an independent advice agency or solicitor for legal representation. There are several organisations involved in the Court Duty Scheme which is run by HARP an independent housing advice agency who offer free independent advice on all housing queries including homelessness. They can help with legal representation.
