Housing associations in York

Housing associations are usually non-profit making organisations. They provide a range of accommodation for rent and in some cases shared ownership. The associations are independent of the council and each has their own allocations policy.

The size, type and locations of homes vary from one association to another.

Methodist Homes

Methodist Homes for the Aged was formed in 1943 by Rev Walter Hall, a Methodist Minister who saw first hand the problems of older people who at that time with no means of income would have spent the rest of their lives in the workhouse. The Charity grew gradually, until, in 1977 Methodist Homes Housing Association was formed, which enabled the use of sheltered housing and other forms of housing for older people.

Founded in 1965 North British is a registered social landlord and one of the country's leading housing providers. They now own and manage more than 47,000 homes throughout the country, this includes houses, flats and bungalows for families, couples and single people.

Tuke Housing Association

Originally set up by York Quakers Tuke's tenants tend to be either elderly or single people. Most of their housing is one or two bedroomed flats close to the centre of York and this accommodation is not usually suitable for children.

Yorkshire Housing

Yorkshire Housing is a family of housing organisations that have come together to form the Yorkshire Housing Group which allows them to improve and extend their services throughout the County. Homes for rent are the core of their business although they do provide some low cost ownership schemes in some key areas of Yorkshire. They are able to provide support to home-owners who are elderly, disabled or vulnerable and ensure that their home is up to standard and fit for their needs.
