Choice based letting

We have no properties available to advertise this week Tuesday 26th August to Monday 1st September 2008. Please look again next week.

Some properties across the city are to be let using choice based lettings: a property is advertised and applicants express an interest in a property by 'bidding' for it. This means saying that you would like to be considered for the property - you do NOT need to pay any money.

When a property designated for choice based lettings properties becomes empty or the tenant tells the council they are going to leave, the council will produce an advert giving details about the size of the property, rent and location as well as other useful information.

Adverts will be displayed from Wednesday through to the following Monday in:

  • the Finance and Housing Centre, Library Square
  • the Customer Advice Centre, 10-12 George Hudson Street
  • the Acomb Housing Office, 50 York Road, Acomb
  • Thursday's York Evening Press property supplement

Current property adverts

Current property adverts can be downloaded from the right hand side of the page.

To make sure you are seeing the most up to date version of this page hold down the 'ctrl' key (on your keyboard) and then press the F5 key.

Bidding for a property

People who are interested in being considered for these properties should contact the council before 4.00pm on the following Monday to place their 'bid' by contacting us or advising a member of staff at:

  • Finance and Housing Centre, Library Square
  • Customer Advice Centre, 10-12 George Hudson Street
  • Acomb Housing Office, 50 York Road, Acomb

You need to be on the council's housing register to be able to bid for properties (application forms are available from the above offices). You will not be able to bid until your form has been processed and accepted.

After the bidding period has closed bids will be ranked by the time each person bidding has been waiting on the housing register, with priority given to persons with a local connection to York.

The property is then offered to the highest ranked bidder. That person will then be contacted and arrangements will be made to view the property. If they subsequently change their mind the property will be offered to the next person on the list.

Feedback on how long the successful bidder had been on the housing register will be provided in housing offices and on the council's website. Only the length of time will be stated - NOT your personal details.
