City Of York Council

Visually impaired adults

If you have a sight loss we will assess how you manage with everyday tasks such as reading, preparing food or getting to the local shops. We can show you ways to get around more safely. These include how to make the best use of a white cane. If you need help at home because of your visual impairment we can arrange for you to receive services such as home or personal care.

A rehabilitation officer provides specialist assessments and practical training for people with more complex needs.

We work with our housing department to report on how suitable a building is when someone has applied for housing because of sight loss. We also liaise with York's Children's Services team and Children's Disability team, who provide help for blind and partially sighted children and their families.

Equipment

We provide a wide range of specialist equipment, such as gadgets to help pour liquids and lighting adaptations. We can advise you, your family and friends about different ways of doing things which you may find easier.

York Blind and Partially Sighted Society

York Blind and Partially Sighted Society is a resource centre for all people with sight problems. It provides advice, information and a home visiting service. They have specialist equipment which can be purchased.
