City Of York Council

Deafblind adults

We help vulnerable deafblind adults who find it difficult to manage and who are at risk in someway. We can help you get regular support from a variety of agencies and professionals. These can include home and/or personal care services and communicator guides.

We can also advise family, friends and carers about how to communicate better with you.

We work with York's Children's Services team, who offer advice and support to parents and staff, and the Children's Disability team, who also support deafblind children and their families.

Loan equipment

We provide a wide range of specialist equipment for deafblind people. This includes:

  • amplified and flashing doorbells
  • loop systems to help hard of hearing people hear the television
  • amplified or text phones
  • magnifying glasses
  • talking clocks and watches to help deafblind people.

We have contracts with the Resource Centre for Deafened People and York Blind and Partially Sighted society. You may receive a service from either one or both of these organisations. Both organisations provide advice, information and issue specialist equipment.
